The Top 10 Most & Least ‘At Risk’ Businesses.

Read a report on the top ten most and least affected businesses by our current economic times.

The most affected was the tyre industry, seems we’re prepared to let our tyres be a little ‘balder’ before we change them over.

The least affected was the beauty industry, go figure. We’re prepared to put our beauty before safety, apparently, amazing. This was a report featured in the Sydney Morning Herald a while back.

I’ve worked in both industries, I know, a bit odd, automotive and beauty don’t seem to go together.

When I was in the tyre game we had an awesome team. We even had rave letters to the local newspaper and were nominated for best business to the Chamber of Commerce. My exhaust fitter was the exception, he was a brilliant fitter but he wasn’t a part of the team. He just wasn’t playing the game with our store and team goals, he threw the dynamics and there was a cost.

But he was so good that I was scared to lose him, so I tolerated his moodiness, his ‘quirks’ and the disunity.

Eventually it got too much, I had to make the tough call and replace him. Gary, the new guy wasn’t as experienced but he worked as a team player. The dynamics shift was huge and the profits soared, we had a unified team cranking past all the previous store goals. Wish I’d done that a lot sooner.

We’ve just done a million dollar makeover on David Osborne’s site Profitable Personnel and that’s what David does, help businesses get the right staff first time round! Who wants that?

That was the first thing we did, rework his ‘claim to fame’ about what he does. It’s a simple yet powerful and memorable ‘catch cry’ – Get the right staff first time round!

Second is we worked and tweaked his lead generation. What is a website? A tool, to build your business!

If you aren’t able to convert web visitors into clients into money it’s all a waste of time, and money.

The results speak for themselves.

I had invested $18,000 on websites before I met Peter, none had generated any leads let alone turn a profit.

The facts: I now obtain one to two leads per day and I am on target to for 100% business growth this year.

In dollars: That is a start-up sole operator business going from zero to $390,000 pa in a couple of years.

How To Look Good Naked! (Weird Title)

I know, weird title but it will make sense.

You know how in life you just ‘click’ with some people? As soon as you meet them the whole ‘get to know you’ bit is just so easy. It’s almost like you’re long lost buddies having a great catch up.

And then there’s the whole similar tastes thing and the “omg, you like that as well?” conversations.

It’s great, I love it. There is that genuine connection and rapport right from the get go.

You have those points of relatedness, you’ve connected emotionally.

Do that with your website and you’ll be rich beyond belief!

Is it working? Is your website converting your visitors and browsers into known prospects?

If not, you haven’t captured the points of relatedness, you’re not ‘connecting’.

Try and get inside their heads, work out why they’re there, what’s their pain, what’s their problem, how can you ‘relate’ with them and therefore engage them.

The free report model is all about making a connection with the prospect. Once you have their attention you “offer” a solution and in exchange for their details you provide some answers. Obviously it needs to address those points of pain, their areas of concerns or questions they have on your subject.

If your report doesn’t cover the “so what” factor people have, then good luck with building up your client base and leads.

You relieve their pain, and for that they’ll willingly give you their contact details.

You now have a ‘known identified prospect’ rather than a ‘random web visitor’!

But it’s also a relationship journey.  What is the best sort of new client to have? A referral! Why?

Because they were referred by a mutual contact so the trust factor is high. That’s what happens when people sign up for your report, or your e-series, you establish credibility and authority, and trust. You’ve started the relationship journey.

So what’s the “How To Look Good Naked” got to do with it?

I ‘connected’ with this guy, Tony de Graaf of Evolve Health. Very passionate about helping people to get their fitness in order, one of those stand out guys you meet in life, a real gentleman (Sorry, don’t mean to embarrass you Tony)

We came up with a catch cry for his business that we turned into the title for his free report “How To Look Good Naked”.

Hey, who doesn’t want that? (He always gets a chuckle at our BNI network meetings)

Tony had already commissioned his website to be built when we met so he had to follow through, bummer.

But what happened next was simply amazing! Tony says it better than me…

What’s Your Marketing Mix? See What Google Has Resorted To!

So many businesses think once they have a website, a steady stream of new clients will flood in. I call it the “build it and they will come” theory. Good luck with that! That’s a big statement seeing as most of our work is websites, but…

We all need a MIX in our marketing for maximum success.

That includes ways to get new clients, run referral campaigns, develop client retention strategies, do email marketing and so on.

I’m a modeller. I look at what others are doing and adapt it. Hey, why reinvent the wheel?

Imagine my surprise when a year or so ago I started getting direct mail letters from Google. There’s a photo on the left.

Even Google Use Direct Mail – yup, letterbox stuff!

They were well crafted, pushed a few “pain” buttons, with a headline “Around 63,571 potential new customers are trying to find you each month with Google searches like – example list of search terms I’m competing for.”

How many of those 63,571 customers would you like? I’d be a happy man at 1/2 % = that’s 317 new clients! I’d love that sort of a cashflow boost!

So here’s the mighty Google, biggest search engine on the planet, online resources beyond belief, taking their marketing “offline”.

It’s not a matter of “Can I use this model in my business?” but the REAL question is “HOW can I use this model in my business?”

And that’s my point. Be a modeller!

A website is just one of tools in your marketing mix. Your website needs to rank well so you get traffic, so you get new takers for your product or services. It also needs to help you establish trust, credibility and position you as the leader in your field. We do particularly well helping our clients in all of the above.

But you need more than that.

What are you doing with your existing or past clients?

It’s like the “diamonds in the farmer’s field” story. The farmer leaves the farm and goes off in search of riches, scouring the world for gold and gems and fortune only to find nothing and come back penniless and disheartened.

With no money for food he starts sowing the fields and lo and behold, there’s diamonds in his own fields.

So how do you harvest your field of diamonds?

  • How do you tap in to the huge resource of referrals your happy clients could give you?
  • How do you motivate, reactivate or inspire lost, old or previous clients to come back?
  • When was the last time you used direct mail with a short sharp punchy message? (as opposed to a long style ordinary newsletter)

Look at what Google are doing are doing and ask yourself the question – “HOW can I use this model in my business?”

My business is exactly the same as yours – so many things to do, such little time.

  • It’s needs to be easy – anything complicated and it just won’t happen.
  • It needs to be quick and simple – none of us want to waste our time.
  • It needs to be really cost effective – we’ve already shelled out serious money with marginal results.
  • It needs to be “outside the box” because people are suffering from the “AMEGO” marketing syndrome.

(“And My Eyes Glaze Over” marketing syndrome – ordinary boring same as everybody else marketing pieces that people don’t notice anymore,  so it’s not effective marketing crap that the brand marketing big boys tell you, “do it more often”, right, spend more of my money for the same miniscule marketing results model)

That’s the power of postcards and greeting cards.

Most People Underrate This SEO Factor

“How do I get my website to rank better in the Search Engines?” is a question I must get asked at least 3 times a week, every week.

And this from both clients and prospects. Now this is a reflection on me, so for that I apologise straight up, I thought I’d educated my clients, but not well enough apparently because this question came from a client just this week.

To get a website ranking high for a particular search term most people’s response would be – right keywords,  optimized title, unique content, back-links and so on. (For non geeks – the title is what you see in the blue bar at the top of your internet screen).

All theses elements are valid and important for SEO, but on their own they won’t help your website “hold it’s position”. They will produce very small results if you don’t combine them with consistency.

And you must have your website HOLD it’s position.

You could launch a new website today with a lot of unique content and many links back to your site (back-links), but unless you keep adding new content and getting new links consistently over time your website would not rank high for any competitive keyword.

The opposite is also true. Even if you launch a website with little unique content and no back-links, you can still get it ranking high for competitive keywords if you consistently keep adding new content and getting new back-links.

Let me illustrate this point with some numbers. Suppose we launch two websites targeting the same keyword, website A and website B. On website A we publish 50 articles right away and manage to attract 500 back-links on the first day thanks to a social media campaign.

On website B, on the other hand, we work gradually publishing one article every other day and getting 10 new back-links per week. After 6 months I would be willing to bet that website B is ranking higher than website A, and that is because it has consistency.

In fact Google confirmed in the past that the pace at which a website publishes new content and gain new back-links is indeed used inside its algorithm.

Whenever you plan an SEO campaign for your site in the future remember that slow and steady can win the race, even on the Internet!

Moral of the story? Be consistent with adding new content. The search engines love it, it means your website has credibility, authority and it’s obviously current and up to date.

Every single time you add a new post (article) you’re bringing the search engine back to your site.

How else to get traffic to a website? Google Adwords – is it valid? Of course it is, trouble is, only around 30% of people actually click on the sponsored “ads” (the search results in the right hand column and small section at the top).

So being consistent will get your website positioned in the main area of the Google results and that’s free, and that’s where at least 70% of people click anyway.

So where do you want your website to be?

So the plan?

Set yourself a regime – Monthly, fortnightly or even weekly. Stick to it. Set a time to write your post and then a time to publish it, and then a time to email it.
